Taking into account physical, hereditary, and environmental factors, our optometrists will chart your child's possible myopic risk and progression.
Our optometrists will also educate patients and parents on visual hygiene and good habits to prevent myopia developing or progressing further.
Simple things like 2 hours of outdoor time each day can make a huge difference to refractive outcomes.
Corneal topography is the measurement and mapping of the front surface of the cornea. Our optometrists use corneal topography to differential diagnose myopic progression and regular astigmatism, from keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration. Our Medmont Meridia is also key to designing the most accurate lenses to treat both myopic progression or keratoconus/PMD.
Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) uses scanning lasers to generate a 3D view of different layers of the eye. The use of OCT is now not uncommon and is even sometimes offered as a "free 3D scan" by other practices. However, used to its full potential by qualified eyecare professionals, the OCT can give amazing insight into many ocular conditions. With our anterior module our optometrists can use OCT to measure corneal thickness and to optimize contact lens fittings.
Pharmaceutical intervention, such as low dose atropine, can be a great adjunct to other methods of myopia control, or in some cases, a relatively non-invasive stand alone treatment where there is high risk of myopia developing.
Repeated low-level red-light therapy (RLRL therapy) is a drug-free option for parents who are concerned about the implications of long-term atropine use for their young children requiring extra myopia control.
RLRLT has been TGA approved for myopia control in young children by gently stimulating blood flow in the ocular fundus to alleviate sclera hypoxia and control the axial lengthening that causes myopia.
Rhodes Optometry is accredited to prescribe Hoya MiyoSmart lenses for myopia control. MiyoSmart lenses uses defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) to reduce myopic progression.
We also prescribe anti-fatigue and progressive lenses if the patient is not suitable for MiyoSmart lenses.
Orthokeratology aka ortho K, has now been long established as one of the most efficacious modalities for myopia control. More information can be found in our contact lens clinic.
